In fond memory of Daniel J. Plummer, aka "djp", who passed away in 2006 in a cycling accident. Dan served as a researcher at CAIDA, assisting with data analysis for OC48 projects and other passive analysis data collections, and also assisted with the CAIDA bandwidth estimation project.
Background
Dan worked with the CAIDA research and analysis team. He was involved with Internet measurement projects using tools like CoralReef for OC48mon data sets. He was also involved with the bandwidth estimation project.
Prior to joining CAIDA in April 2001, Dan was a faculty member of the department of Ophthalmology, UCSD. His research included studies of perceptual phenomena like transparency, development of entoptic perimetry (a screening test for visual function loss) using a virtual reality device, linking HIV infection with cognitive and perceptual changes in these populations and (in collaboration with Andrew Stockman, PhD) studies of nonlinearities in the early color visual system.
Dan received both his Sc.B. in Cognitive Science with Honors and his A.B. in Computer Science from Brown University in May, 1988. He then moved to UCSD where he earned an M.A. (1991) and Ph.D. (1992) in Psychology, advised by V.S. Ramachandran.
On January 1, 2006, Dan was struck by a falling tree branch blown down by high winds while riding his cycle in Los Altos Hills. He was a member of Northern California's Premier Cycling Team and a 2005 district champion. CAIDA mourns the loss of a good friend and colleague.
