Performance measurements involve the introduction of traffic into the network for the purpose of monitoring delay between specific end-points. CAIDA conducts active measurement of the Internet to to produce realistic models of performance and topology.
Netpulse and Calit2
NetPulse is a collaboration between the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) and the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) located at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). The NetPulse project aims to create browser-based tools for Internet users in California to measure, aggregate, and graph the broadband performance from their home or business.
Skitter
Skitter is a tool for actively probing the Internet in order to analyze topology and performance.
