Internet routing poses complex data collection and analysis problems. In an attempt to separate facts from Internet `myths' about the routing system, CAIDA focuses in this proposal on what research questions are relevant to maintaining the health of the global Internet routing system. Understanding of global inter-domain Internet routing dynamics lags significantly behind the growth in the routing system itself. To improve the routing system, we need to better understand how it currently works, starting with calibration and refinement of various methods used to analyze routing dynamics. This proposal is founded on the premise that it takes an understanding of the behavior of the existing Internet to develop scalable solutions that allow graceful Internet evolution. CAIDA proposes the development of techniques for correlating massive volumes of Internet routing and topology data and the development and enhancement of tools aimed at improving the community's ability to model realistic inter-domain Internet routing behavior.
