The Internet infrastructure currently has no framework for system-level studies of wide-area, cross-domain Internet traffic behavior. As a result, a representative longitudinal analysis of macroscopic workload trends, and systematic preparation for the growing expectations of Internet users, are not possible today.
We at CAIDA are designing an Internet Measurement Data Catalog (IMDC) which is a repository to archive meta-data for many heterogeneous data sets. Our goal is to create the database architecture and annotation system that will fit the existing and future data sets (rather than try fitting data sets to the architecture). We will use this database to catalog and annotate our own existing data at SDSC, but the meta-data repository will multiply its value by accommodating raw data sets from other sites. External researchers making use of the IMDC will have web access to a user interface. They can then query for specific signatures in data sets and will receive answers pointing them to the locations of the data they are interested in.
The ISMA Data Catalog workshop aims to bring together the most active researchers in the area of Internet measurements. The main objectives of the workshop are:
- present our IMDC design to the research community
- get the feedback from researchers on compatibility of the proposed architecture and their data management needs
- identify open problems that require further research
